Literally speaking…

So I was off-island yesterday, and I simply had to stop in Woods Hole before getting back on the ferry and take a picture of this sign. It is my very favorite one in this whole, entire, lovely world.

MARTHA’S VINEYARD. NEXT LEFT.

In truth, if you take your “next left” and keep going, you’d better have on your water wings, because you’ll run smack into Vineyard Sound.

Of course, they meant to write, “BOAT TO MARTHA’S VINEYARD, NEXT LEFT, or “MARTHA’S VINEYARD FERRY, NEXT LEFT.”

Whatever.

Since I first noticed that sign years and years ago, it has amused me. Not because I’m a literary snob (hardly), but because I’d like to think that someone in the State Highway Department has a very cool sense of humor.

Have a great day – it’s another gorgeous one out here on the island!

  1. Jean –

I also get a big kick out of that sign every time I see it. To me, it serves as a kind of psychological ‘point of no return’, where once I hang that left, there’s no going back. (figuratively speaking, of course).

That sign provides comfort in knowing that I’ll be setting foot on the hallowed ground of the Vineyard within an hour; given that I have a vehicle reservation during the high season (stand-by is a nightmare during those times), or if it happens to be the off-season, where getting a space is not much of an issue. However, I am finding that more and more people are discovering the secret of the off-season…avoiding the crowds while still enjoying pleasant weather, particularly this past October, where the warmth stayed around much longer that ususal! I went swimming on October 9th – a first for me.

Thanks for posting that picture…makes me long to be there on the Island right now!

    Best,
    Kevin
