Onward

Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions. Sadly, no cats allowed. 😦 But the mice are packing up and moving out, thanks to a terrific Rodent Relocation Specialist. I shall not think about them again. (We hope.)
I thought today I’d share a pic I took on Chappy at the lovely Mytoi Japanese Gardens. Serene, peaceful, looking so much like fall. Everywhere I turn on MV there is something new and different to explore. I never get tired of this place.
Off to a Chocolate Festival tonight…talk about delicious fun! And way better to comment on than critters.

I Spent the Night at the Clarion

Mice: 3. Me: 1. Okay, so I am a scaredy-cat. (I get that from my mother.) But coming face to face, eye to eye with the 3rd mouse of the night sent me packing. I grabbed my purse, my keys, and the TV remote. (Apparently I didn’t want them watching NCIS reruns on my dime.)

I drove around a while; wound up at the Clarion. They were so nice. They even gave me a complimentary “overnight” toiletry bag. Islanders seem to have a lot of patience for us city-folk. I am so grateful!

Anyway, the exterminator will be here before noon. Lesson learned: Don’t leave home without your make-up. Or clean underwear. (You’d think my mother would have taught me that as well.)

View from the Chappaquiddick Ferry

The ferry to Chappaquiddick is actually called the On-Time Ferry, and its name serves it well. I love this little boat, which is sort of like a raft with a big motor. It holds up to 3 cars, or two pick-up trucks, or a dump truck and an SUV, or any of configuration thereof, and a dozen or so folks with or without bicycles. The precision with which the captains steer it is to be commended: the current is rapid, they have to dodge the boats coming and going from the inner harbor, and though the crossing is quick, it’s always fun. The only time I get a bit anxious is when my car is the first one on. The captain waves me forward and keeps waving until I am sure I am about to drop into the drink. Then I remind myself he knows what he is doing. Still, once I’ve been told to stop, the only thing separating my Jetta from the water is a length of chain. All I can see over the dashboard is, well, check out the picture. Yikes. Still, I love it. More on my visit to Chappy tomorrow. But first, I have to let you know I got the mouse. Hopefully, his younger brother won’t show up tonight.

Hello from Martha’s Vineyard!

It’s a beautiful day in Edgartown, where I have come for rest and repose and rewriting, I suppose. Or new writing, with fingers crossed and breath held until I turn purple. I am in the reference room of the much-beloved library now, under the big Boston Fern, looking out toward Chappaquiddick, where my next adventure will take place. Thankfully, summer is not letting go of the Vineyard this year. Even the channel from here to Chappy quietly, respectfully, waits for the tourists to leave. The only sign that fall is approaching is the MOUSE in the place I am renting. We have been having a war of wills since my arrival on Saturday. So far, he is winning. Stay tuned.
